Baja is Back at Puerto Los Cabos

Nestled at the opening to the Sea of Cortex is Baja's biggest and maybe it's best.

Aerial Shot of Puerto Los Cabos MarinaIn the past few years, development in Los Cabos, the priciest and most extensively developed resort area of Mexico, has slowed to a crawl. Puerto Los Cabos is the exception, and shows that the Cabo region is coming back in a big way. This major undertaking rivals such established master planned resort communities as Cabo Real, Cabo del Sol, and Palmilla, and will include several residential communities, multiple luxury hotels, two big name golf courses and extensive infrastructure including what is currently the largest private marina in Mexico. It occupies a whopping 2,000 acres, with a very impressive 3 miles of beachfront, just east of artsy, charming San Jose del Cabo, and only 10 minutes from the Los Cabos International Airport.

World-Class Golf
Puerto Los Cabos Nicklaus CourseNo development in these parts is complete without a golf course, and to date, every one in the area has been by a top designer, including Nicklaus, Love, Fazio and Robert Trent Jones II. Puerto Los Cabos is no exception, with the region's third Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, and a sibling layout by Greg Norman, whose critically acclaimed El Cameleon in the Yucatan already hosts Mexico's only PGA Tour event. The two golf courses anchor the community, and once complete the Norman course will be a private country club for owners and hotel guests, while the Nicklaus design will allow outside play. Currently 9 holes of each are finished and open to all comers. With 18 holes, the marina and several other facilities already up and running, Puerto Los Cabos is ready for prime time, and currently has more than 100 homes complete, with a broad assortment of lots and finished homes available for purchase. As the resort hotels are finished, amenities will increase dramatically, adding multiple restaurants, bars, spas and fitness facilities to the mix.

Sand, Water and Art
While golf is the main appeal, the beach is also a standout, especially since few resorts in the Los Cabos region have safe, swimmable beaches, a rarity in these parts. The vast expanse of sand will offer a full complement of watersports such as snorkeling, windsurfing and paddling, and the community will house several private beach clubs with waterfront infinity pools and food and beverage service. Puerto Los Cabos will be fully amenitized, including a state of art 180-slip marina, open since March 2010 and capable of handling visiting mega-yachts up to 450 feet, with long-term storage for those up to 150 feet. It notably houses the first full-service repair facility on the Baja Peninsula (by Marine Group of San Diego).

Services for owners and guests will include yachting, whale watching and fishing excursions, and the tip of the Baja Peninsula is world renowned for its billfishing, the main sporting attraction here long before the first golf course was built, a hotspot known as Marlin Alley. A marina retail complex will feature shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, and plans call for condominiums as part of the marina village. Other infrastructure includes an unusual element, a desert botanical garden called the Wirikuta. It is one of the largest gardens in Mexico, with over 1,500 species of plants.

Endless Luxury Living Options
Puerto Los Cabos Finished HomeFundadores is the largest of the three sub-communities, and includes the beach club, marina, and is located amidst the Norman course, with membership offered too all buyers. Dozens of very varied sites are available in a wide range of sizes, including waterfront, from as little as $124,900 to $5 million. There are currently five finished homes for sale, from $2,975,000 to $7,500,000. Villas San Mateo is an enclave of 14 pre-designed luxury villas in seven two-level duplex units (no lots) that will break ground this year within Fundadores, surrounding a forthcoming hotel from a major US-based luxury chain (to be announced shortly). The villas will all be 3 BR, 3 ½ baths, just over 2,000 square feet, with private terraces with grills, spas, dual master bedrooms, gourmet kitchens, laundry rooms, car and golf cart garages, private beach club membership and a communal pool. Prices range from $850,000 to $1,125,000 with upper level units commanding a premium.

El Altillo translates roughly to altitude, and is an elevated community with views down to the Sea of Cortez and the fairways of the five holes that surround and buffer the development. El Altillo currently offers homesites only, with just 11 remaining out of 79, from $160,000-$650,000.
